Parish Missions
“Did not our hearts burn within us…while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
Luke 24:32
What is a Parish Mission?
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI wrote, “Our own time, then, must be increasingly marked by a new hearing of Godโs word and a new evangelization” (Verbum Domini, ยง122). It is the mission of the Emmaus Institute to cultivate life-transforming encounters with Christ in his Word for parish clergy, catechists, parents, home group leaders, and others called to deeper formation. A parish mission facilitates opportunities for this formation in a retreat-like atmosphere. Each parish mission includes time for reflection and prayer around a particular biblical theme, in order to pursue the ways the Lord wishes to speak to us and form us through the Scriptures.

“The Emmaus Institute is doing vital work in forming disciples of Jesus. Iโm moved by how they shape hearts through His Word to know His heart more intimately.”
Fr. Cole Kennett, Pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church

Encountering Jesus on the Road to Emmaus
Led by Chad Steiner
“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while heย opened to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:32). The scene bursts with biblical imagery. It’s creational; it’s eucharistic; it’s liturgical. In this scene, Jesus establishes the mode and model through which men and women of all ages will encounter him: first in the opening of the Word, and then in the breaking of the bread. This mission will walk through this iconic Easter passage to meet Jesus in the opening of the Scriptures and the breaking of the bread.

Encountering God in the Pits and on the Peaks: Psalms at the Poles of Life
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner
All of us experience lifeโs polaritiesโsometimes in the valleys, sometimes on high mountaintops. Without compare in the whole of Sacred Scripture, the Book of Psalms gives us a language for prayer and praise in such times. This mission explores how various psalms take us into the pits and onto the peaks, enabling us to cope with lifeโs realities the way God intended.

The Return of the King in the Gospel of Matthew
Led by Chad Steiner
The Gospel of Matthew brings to fruition the hopes of the Old Testament that longed for the son of David to come and establish Godโs Kingdom on earth and redeem his people. This mission will introduce texts and themes from the Gospel of Matthew with attentive ears and prayerful hearts, enabling us to encounter the incarnate Lord, the great teacher and healer of mankind, and ultimatelyโborrowing from Tolkienโto behold the Return of the King.

Behold, Our God: Meeting the Creator in Genesis 1
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner and/or Chad Steiner
The early chapters of Genesis are foundational to the entire Bible and to knowing God personally. This mission focuses on how God introduces himself in the Bibleโs very first chapter, including Godโs person, plans, and purposes, even Godโs blueprint for marriage and family.

Seasonal Missions:
Jubilee:
Jesus, Jubilee, and the Story of Redemption
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner
In this Jubilee Year of Hope, the Church invites us to reflect on one of the Bibleโs central themesโthe theme of hope. This mission develops hope in the context of the biblical vision of Jubilee, showing how Jesus embodies and fulfills all the blessings of Jubilee hope and how the Eucharist is the means by which we access those blessings today.

Advent:
What Shall We Call Him?
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner and/or Chad Steiner
Each Advent we are invited to reflect upon the Incarnation of Jesus and the various ways in which he is revealed to us. The angel Gabriel stipulates that his name shall be called ‘Jesus’, yet we also hear other important titles such as ‘Lord’, ‘Christ’, and ‘Immanuel’. What does each of these names mean and how does it help us encounter the heart of the Incarnate Lord?

Awaiting Emmanuel: The O Antiphons of Advent
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner and/or Chad Steiner
Drawn from Isaiahโs prophecies of the coming Messiah, each of the seven O Antiphons highlights a title for the One whose advent we anticipate. This mission will explore the rich biblical significance of each of the Antiphons and how they shape our hearts in preparation for the coming of Jesus.

Lent:
“Behold, the Lamb”: Lent and the Lamb of God
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner
Lent is a time to meet Jesus our Lord in profound ways. This mission considers the Lamb theme of the Bible from the standpoint of Godโs Provision, Godโs Passover, and Godโs Perfect Offering, as a way of preparing our hearts to gaze upon the wonder and the glory of โthe Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.โ

The Anatomy of a Lent-Shaped Heart: Meditations on Psalms
Led by Dr. Vern Steiner
For many of us, the Book of Psalms might be little more than a reservoir for daily prayers and Mass responses routinely sung or spoken. But Jesus’ own heart was shaped by this book. And so this mission exposes some of the profound truths and riches of the psalms, with a view to shaping our hearts to be like our Lordโs Sacred Heart.
