Redeeming Communication: Christian Speech in a Hostile World

Posted in

This seminar was given on the morning of January 23, 2021 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Lincoln, NE. It featured three talks that consider how the way we communicate with others should be shaped by the way that God has shared himself with the world in his Word.

Vern Steiner surveys the biblical voice of Wisdom, especially Proverbs and Sirach, to bring to light some of the Bibleโ€™s insights on how Godโ€™s people are intended to speak to one another and to the world in which we live; in a manner that brings healing rather than destruction.

Joshua Burks leads us through a careful reading of James 3 to consider the costly weight of words, and explain how sins such as lying, gossip, and slander lie at the root of many of our modern problems.

Chad Steiner concludes by exploring practical ways both to develop skills necessary for fruitful communication, as well as the virtues necessary to practice such skills wisely, so that our communication is “gracious and seasoned with salt” (Col 4:6) rather than ungracious and salty.
